Mbed-mbedan: A Unique Tug-of-War Ritual from Semata Village

Bali is renowned not only for its breathtaking beaches but also for its rich and meaningful cultural traditions. One of the most unique is Mbed-mbedan, a time-honored tradition preserved by the krama (villagers) of Semata Village, Mengwi District, Badung Regency.

Mbed-mbedan is an attraction resembling a tug-of-war performed by two community groups. However, there is one distinct feature that sets it apart: the equipment used is not a plastic or hemp rope, but rather creeping plant roots harvested from the local village cemetery (setra).
