Hari Raya Galungan is one of the major holidays for Hindus in Bali, including in Badung Regency. This holiday is celebrated once every 210 days, based on the Balinese calendar (Wuku). Galungan is believed to be the victory day of Dharma (good) over Adharma (evil).
In Badung, Galungan celebrations are characterized by various distinctive traditions and rituals. The day before Galungan, Hindus make penjor, which is a towering bamboo decoration decorated with janur (young coconut leaves) and crops. This penjor is installed in front of each house as a symbol of prosperity and gratitude. On Galungan day, Hindus pray at the temple to ask for blessings and safety. They also gather with their families to stay in touch and enjoy typical Galungan dishes, such as lawar, satay lilit, and jaje (traditional cake).
