The Mekotek Tradition in Munggu Village, Badung

History and Origins

The Mekotek tradition is one of the enduring cultural heritages in Munggu Village, Mengwi District, Badung. This ritual is usually held every six months, on Kuningan Day, after the community has completed prayers at the temple.

The name Mekotek comes from the sound “tek-tek” produced when hundreds of wooden poles clash against each other. These poles, usually made of pulet wood, measure about 2–3 meters in length. Originally, this tradition was performed as a ritual to ward off misfortune and to pray for the safety and prosperity of the villagers.

Ritual Procession

Mekotek begins with a communal prayer at the village temple. Afterward, the men gather carrying wooden poles. The poles are stacked together, forming a cone-like tower.

In turns, young men climb up to the top of the pole structure, standing proudly at the peak. This action creates a lively atmosphere, accompanied by cheers and the sound of traditional gamelan music that enlivens the ritual.

Mekotek is more than just an attraction—it carries deep philosophical values, such as:
