Mebuug-buugan is a unique tradition in Kedonganan Traditional Village, Badung Regency, Bali, held the day after Nyepi (Ngembak Geni). The event is similar to a mud war, where residents - especially young men - run around and throw mud on each other's bodies.
1) Meaning and Philosophy
Mebuug-buugan comes from the word buug, which means mud in Balinese. This ritual has a spiritual meaning as a form of self-purification from negativity after Nyepi. This is in line with the concept of Tri Hita Karana, which emphasizes the balance between man, nature, and God.
2) Event Procession
Preparation Residents gather at Pura Dalem Kedonganan to pray together. Mud War The participants head to a muddy area, usually on land near the beach or rice fields. They start throwing mud at each other with great joy. Purification at Sea After finishing, participants flock to Kedonganan Beach to clean themselves at sea as a symbol of purification.
